Toned Tiles Knitted Afghan

Toned Tiles
(Taken from a Paton Canadiana book my Nana passed along but is now memorized)
MATERIALS: Canadiana Superwash Wool or Canadiana Sayelle. You will need: - 6 (50g) balls dark (A), 5 balls medium dark (B), 5 balls medium light (C), 6 balls light (D). Two No. 5 (5½ mm), (U.S. 9)  knitting needles or whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
TENSION: 17 sts. and 24 rows = 4 ins (10cm) in stocking st
 MEASUREMENT: 50 x 60 ins (127 x 152cm) excluding fringe.
NOTE: This afghan may be worked in separate squares if desired, but to reduce sewing, instructions are given for squares to be knitted in 4 continuous strips of 5 squares each.
Joining and breaking yarn as required proceed: -
To make 1st strip: With (A) cast on 56 sts.
 1st row: Knit.
2nd row: K4 for Garter st. border at left side edge. Purl to end of row
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.

11th row: K8(A). Join (B). K40(B). Join 2nd ball (A). K8(A).
12th row: K4(A). P4(A). P40(B). P8(A).
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.

21st row: K8(A). K8(B). Join (C). K24(C). Join 2nd ball (B). K8(B). K8(A).
22nd row: K4(A). P4(A). P8(B). P24(C). P8(B). P8(A).
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.

31st row: K8(A). K8(B). K8(C). Join (D). K8(D). Join 2nd ball (C). K8(C). K8(B). K8(A).
32nd row: K4(A). P4(A). P8(B). P8(C). P8(D). P8(C). P8(B). P8(A).
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.

41st row: K8(A). K8(B). K24(C). K8(B). K8(A).
42nd row: K4(A). P4(A). P8(B). P24(C). P8(B). P8(A).
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.

51st row: K8(A). K40(B). K8(A).
52nd row: K4(A). P4(A). P40(B). P8(A)
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.

61st row: With (A) knit.
62nd row: With (A) K4. Purl to end of row.
Repeat these 2 rows 4 times.
*This completes one square*

Substituting (D) for (A), (C) for (B), (B) for (C) and (A) for (D).
Repeat these 70 rows for 2nd square.
Work 1st and 2nd square once, then 1st square (5 squares in strip).

To make 2nd strip: Omitting Garter st. border, work as 1st strip, beginning with 2nd square and ending with 2nd square.

To make 3rd strip: Omitting Garter st. border, work exactly as given for 1st strip.

To make 4th strip: Working Gartner st. border for right side edge by K4 at end of purl rows instead of beginning, work as given for 2nd strip.

TO MAKE UP: Darn in all ends. Sew strips together. Press lightly.
FRINGE: Using matching colour for fringe, wind the yarn over a piece of cardboard 5 ins. Wide and cut through one edge. Take 3 strands together, double them and using a crochet hook, draw a loop through the end of the afghan. Pass the ends through the loop and knot firmly. Repeat at even distances along the ends of the afghan. Trim evenly.

TIPS FROM GRANDMA SWILLS:
-          make sure to wrap wool around each other whenever you are switching colours – to avoid holes
-          I knit in my ends as I go so that I don’t have to darn them all in later
-       I previously knit 5 strips of 5 squares, but have now adjusted this to 5 strips of 6 squares

ENJOY!!!!
